Positive health and wellbeing is a key focus of our work with children and young people.
We provide opportunities for children and young people to participate in a diverse range of sports and activities that contribute to increasing confidence, self-esteem and aspirations and improving emotional, mental and physical health. Creating opportunities and activities for participants to be active, share experiences and build more positive relationships and understanding between all ages of their community.
Our diverse range of activities includes sports, games, dance, circus skills, play, fitness, gender and age specific projects, environmental activities, horticulture, low level bush craft and green crafts and outdoors cooking.
We also support young people to improve local green spaces, eg: litter picks, nature walks, increasing community use of green spaces and promoting a positive shift in their use away from that of somewhere to drink and use substances. Promoting family engagement, intergenerational and cultural activities. Spending time outdoors and being active in nature has such a positive impact on health and wellbeing.
We facilitate indoor and outdoor learning environments that challenge, develop and nurture critical thinking and problem solving within young people as they transition through adolescence.
We have an allotment and 2 orchards that we mange in partnership with Yorkshire wildlife Trust providing a wide range of opportunities for learning about growing, harvesting and cooking fruits and vegetables, horticulture, the environment and healthy eating.
The community orchards were developed and created by young people, volunteers and staff from YMCA Barnsley and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and along with our community allotment provide wonderful opportunities for people to get involved in our local area and help our local wildlife.
We have a sports hall with changing rooms available for hire to community and sports groups.
Some of the groups that choose to base their activities with us include:
